The first time you hear Dexter Gordon, you get the impression you've always known him, for the simple reason that he had a profound influence on such tenor stars as John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins. In fact, in the mid-Forties, Dexter Gordon had been the first great bebop tenor saxophonist, combining the legacies of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Charlie Parker. His powerful sound, his nonchalance and elegance, later made him the archetype of the great jazz saxophone-player, especially after a vast audience watched him acting in the film "Round Midnight". Enjoying the respect of all his peers and the admiration of jazz lovers everywhere, he was most eloquent when expressing the unavoidable truths of great, good music.
